Our Impact
The challenges facing the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County are significant and imminent. With more than 500 miles of coastline what makes the region such a unique and wonderful place is what makes it particularly vulnerable. Meeting these challenges will require innovative thinking, executional strategy and implementation, and measuring success. The suite of metrics will be used to guide our approach and track our progress on each project and as an organization as a whole.
Environmental Measures
Central to improving resilience are the environmental factors that we can address. Our projects reduce water and air pollutants, restore acres of shoreline, floodplain, beaches, marshes, and oyster reefs; plant trees, and improve green stormwater infrastructure. We quantitatively track the headway our teams and partners make in these areas.
Economic Improvement
A strong regional economy makes Annapolis and Anne Arundel County the vibrant place it has become and facilitates environmental efforts. We support the economic health of the region by estimating the value of business opportunities saved or averting disruption through preventative measures, estimating property value preserved, and supporting jobs in the region directly tied to our projects.
Whole Region Approach
Fulsome regional resilience can only be achieved by supporting every community in the area, including specifically addressing underserved communities. We measure our impact in these communities by tracking: the number of jobs our projects support, the number of projects that improve community understanding, consideration, and adaptation to climate hazards and risks, the square footage of green spaces created and/or improved, the number of trees planted, and the funds saved in these communities driven by climate mitigation efforts.
Innovating for the Future
We execute projects today, but plan for tomorrow by investing in new technologies and practices, driving towards green energy, and continually revising and improving our internal performance. By tracking investments in projects that explore new ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources, and improve restoration practices, including greater efficiency in the beneficial use of dredged material, we lay the groundwork for long-term regional resilience.
